GRK WINE - CROATIA'S HIDDEN TREASURE

Have you ever heard a story about wine that can’t self-pollinate?

At the scenic island of Korčula, located in the south of Croatia's Dalmatian coast, lies a secret treasure in the world of wine: Grk wine. This distinct type of white wine, with its incredible history and unique, intriguing qualities, continues to draw wine lovers from across the globe. Let us introduce you to Grk wine, a different and valuable discovery with exceptional characteristics.

A WINEMAKING PROCESS WITH A DIFFERENCE

Grk wine is a truly exclusive treasure, found only on the island of Korcula, specifically in Lumbarda. The name 'Grk' is a nod to the island's Greek roots, dating back to the fourth century BC when the Greeks first planted the vines. These vineyards, spanning a mere 50 hectares, are a testament to the wine's exclusivity and rich history.

The best terroir for growing Grk grapes is Lumbarda's sandy, limestone-rich soils. This setting and the Mediterranean climate mean these grapes have high sugar levels and acidity. Grapevines are usually grown on small landpieces that belong to relatives, which adds an element of art to their production.

The most captivating part of Grk wine is how the grape reproduces itself. Grk vines only have female flowers, meaning they cannot pollinate themselves. So, to make fruit, other grapes, Plavac Mali or Rukatac, must be planted between the vines. Natural cross-pollination processes are only sometimes successful. Therefore, production is minimal, which contributes to Grk's exclusivity.

In Lumbarda, winemaking remains traditional, so most winemakers harvest grapes manually. This cautious undertaking requires much work, ensuring only high-quality grapes are chosen. This labor-intensive process is a testament to the dedication and effort put into making Grk wine, inviting the audience to appreciate the craftsmanship and dedication behind each bottle.

TASTING NOTES AND PAIRINGS

Grk wine is known for its vivid, bright, golden-yellow color and aromatic bouquet. On the nose, it typically offers hints of citrus, dried apricots, and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is often described as full-bodied and well-structured, with a refreshing acidity and a subtle saline minerality, reflecting the island's coastal influence. These specific flavor notes make Grk wine an exceptional and enjoyable experience for any wine lover.

The wine pairs beautifully with local seafood, particularly shellfish, grilled fish, and light pasta dishes. Acidity and mineral notes go perfectly with goat cheese and other fresh cheeses.

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

Grk wine has recently begun acquiring international significance. Nowadays, there are quite a few major wine shows worldwide where Croatian winemakers showcase Grk, which has received lots of positive feedback due to its uniqueness and great taste.

Grk wine is not just a wine; it's a rare and exclusive gem produced in small quantities from tiny vineyards. This makes it a precious find, enticing those seeking one-of-a-kind wines. It is a testament to Croatia's rich winemaking tradition and qualities of its land. Its history, traditional, demanding production methods, and unmistakable taste make Grk an exciting find for any true wine lover.
